Red Rock Loop Trails - Sedona AZ

Upper and Lower Red Rock Loop Trails
At this point I'd like to congratulate Jack Blodgett and the Kiwanis Clubs of Sedona for the multi-use trail along the side of 89A South from Red Rock High School at Upper Loop Road to the Lower Loop Road. Jack has been a visionary in using the fiber optics right of way. Too bad it took so long. The city missed an early opportunity to be progressive and support bicycle travel. This leg of Red Rock Pathways gives mountain bikers, as well as other users, an alternative to the treacherous turns on 89A South. Thanx, Jack!

Once on the Lower Loop Road, there are many options for trail rides.

The mellowest ride takes you through Red Rock State Park (fee) on your way across Oak Creek. Then out the back gate onto Turkey Creek Road. Follow this till you "T" at Verde Valley School Road. A right will take you to the Village of Oak Creek (VOC) and the Bell Rock Trail. A left will take you back via Red Rock Crossing, a tiny walking bridge, and then out to Lower Loop. Then you're on your way back towards Red Rock State park and back home on the Red Rock Pathways to the high school and town.

If you like tricky horsey single tracks, check out the network off the infamous 9845 road, to the right just after newly-developing Elmersville. This network of trails can take you down to and through the water, so it's a great hot weather ride area. Remember not to drink the water! Most of the trails are on the ambitious side with the exception of the 9845 Road, and old 4X road which was part of the original Jerome Highway way back when the old trading post building stood. Check it out. PLEASE YIELD to the HORSES. These trails are signed and maintained by the folks at Kachina Stables. Ride with care and courtesy.

Don't forget the dreaded House Mountain. Either climb the old seven mile road from the VOC side or check your technical skills on the single track climb from the water side. Either way it's a local favorite.

My personal favorite is the gnarly-climbing Scheurman's Mountain from behind the high school, a major hike-a-bike-up for people not versed in uphill technical skills. Once on top, there is a rocky, cactusy and cow-holey single track across the top with great views. The downhill is tight and rocky with a few switchbacks, all rideable if you're able. The trail continues across the Lower Loop Road and connects into the horse trails from 9845. Way cool, not for the faint of heart.

There are other secrets out there that you have to explore on your own!!
